The internationally-minded designer who discovered façades are much more than just windows

When Marius Nevecka, our Head of Technical Design, first joined Staticus he was worried the job might be a bit boring. After all, façades are basically windows, right? Well, it is safe to say he hasn’t been bored, having worked in 4 different roles, been involved in numerous international projects and internal projects, and worked with colleagues from across Europe.

What was it like when you first started at Staticus? And how do you take care of new colleagues that join your team?

I started in early 2014 and I remember it very well. At first, it was very challenging because before Staticus I had been working in a small local company where I was the only engineer responsible for different types of structures.

Suddenly, I was in a team of 30 engineers working on much more complex projects. From the first day I had to do architectural design, and later on workshop drawing. I had a mentor who helped me a lot, and I worked hard to grow quickly.

Recently, all of the new people in our team have been from other countries – our team of engineers includes colleagues in Austria, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Ireland, Turkey and more. Onboarding these new international colleagues has been challenging during the COVID-19 pandemic because I don’t have an opportunity to meet them in person. Instead, we have a lot of remote conversations and meetings, and I try to give lots of guidance on where to find information and answer as many questions as I can. Plus, I always try to check and see how they are doing and if there are any obstacles I can help them with.

What is the single best thing about working at Staticus?

First of all, I value how stable the company is. We have projects lined up for 2 years ahead.

Then there is working on amazing projects across Europe, and getting to see how these projects are implemented and realised. On these projects, I like communicating with clients from different countries. I should also mention the friendly environment and career opportunities.

What new perspectives have you gained while working at Staticus?

I have seen projects from a lot of different perspectives because I have been through the whole chain of design in the company. I took a step down in terms of my position when I joined Staticus as an Assistant Engineer because I was new to façades. Then I progressed to Design Engineer then Senior Engineer, and now Head of Technical Design.

What new skills and competencies have you learned while working at Staticus?

I have learned so many things in general at Staticus. Before I joined I didn’t properly understand what a façade was, and I thought it might be a bit boring. Will I just be designing windows? But in fact, they are incredibly complex, and I have learned a lot of new technical skills – I have improved my technical drawing and learned to plan and estimate design time accurately.

There are also some soft skills I have learned, such as leadership, coaching, and delegation. Plus I have gained experience working with colleagues and companies from different countries, including our Austrian office, who joined us in 2019.

What makes Staticus a unique place to work?

It is the very challenging work conditions, and the fact that we are operating in a competitive market, that makes working here unique. What’s important is that we always find a way to manage the project well and get a great result.

What interests you most about your job?

The fact that every project is different, and that within one project there are many different elements. This means every day there is something new, so there is no repetition and you’re learning all the time.

Which project are you most proud of?

The Hub Hotel project which is right in the center of Oslo. It was an interesting reconstruction project, and the clients and architects were really happy with the result. It looks amazing when the sun shines on it.

Tell us a bit about your life outside of work.

I am into sports. Every Monday some colleagues and I play basketball, plus I go to the gym. I like reading, mostly history and fantasy books. And of course, I enjoy meeting friends and travelling a lot.
