Forskaren is a stand-out part of Stockholm’s developing pharmaceutical cluster. The 10-storey building will serve as a life sciences hub, bringing together global experts in healthcare, innovation and research.

The 24,000 m² Forskaren building embodies a dynamic architectural vision. This round structure houses offices, exhibition spaces, restaurants, and cafes, with each floor stepping out by more than 1m in radius. The challenge for Staticus was to find a solution that allowed for a fully unitized façade given the building’s shape. Typically, unitized façade systems are not standard for buildings where each floor extends outward by such a significant measure.

The building aims to be open and inviting, and the façade plays a crucial role in achieving this effect. The exterior features wooden slats made from Accoya wood, a natural pine product specially processed for stability and durability exceeding that of tropical hardwood. These wooden slats transition to glass at the entrance, providing visitors and passersby with a view into the interior.

The bearing profiles are made from Circal recycled-content aluminum. The Accoya wood cladding is integrated from the outside, while veneered wood cladding is installed from the inside of the façade units. The result is a truly breathtaking building.

On this project, Staticus’ installation department set a new record. The two installation teams working on this project installed an average of 18 elements every day. On their most productive day, the teams managed to install 74 elements, achieving installation rates that were twice, and sometimes even three times, the planned rate.

Innovative use of technology played a crucial role in achieving this incredible installation speed. The installation team used a Maeda Mini Crane MC104 and an SL1009 glazing robot, which was used to install not only the glass but the entire elements themselves.

The result is a visually stunning project that also achieves very high levels of performance. The sustainability criteria for the Forskaren project were very high, and preliminary figures show that these criteria have been met. Embodied CO2 emissions per 1 m² of façade are under 100 kg/m², compared to 150 kg/m² in similar buildings.

Staticus estimates project implementation to be completed in 2023.
